Our Story

How it all began…

Adam Moseley, founder of Tamp & Grind, began his career as a firefighter, serving in West Sussex, Hampshire, and finally London. Alongside his shifts in the fire brigade, Adam always had a passion for business and usually had a “side hustle” on the go.

One of these was a window cleaning business run with his best friend. It was successful, but Adam realised he didn’t love window cleaning with the same passion he had for coffee — particularly high-end, specialty coffee. Over the years, he owned more than 15 different coffee machines, eventually upgrading to a La Marzocco Linea Mini — a serious home setup by any standard.

After selling the window cleaning business, Adam set his sights on a mobile coffee venture. He discovered the Piaggio Apé — Italian for “bee” — named for its tiny two-stroke engine that buzzes like a bee down the streets of Naples.

His first pitch was in Lancing, just outside Miller & Carter on Manor Road. After three months of trading, he sold coffee at a small Christmas fete, where a director of a local hardware and builders’ merchants, Gardner and Scardifield offered him a regular pitch outside their Penhill Road branch.

Fast forward a year, and Adam had built a loyal following at Penhill Road. It was then he made the bold decision to leave the fire brigade and pursue coffee full-time. The opportunity soon came to open Tamp & Grind’s first shop on South Street, Lancing — the town’s very first specialty coffee shop.

Demand quickly grew, and in August 2025, a second shop opened in Burgess Hill, in partnership with the London Road branch of Gardener and Scardifield.

From the start, Tamp & Grind has been built on strong foundations: supporting other local businesses by sourcing from them wherever possible, delivering the highest-quality coffee at fair prices, and making every customer feel valued and welcome.

That is the Tamp & Grind way ❤️
